March 2017 status

I have at least 10ppm iron. Our pump generates about 8 gpm.

All my tanks are 10x44 with Fleck 7000 valves with upper baskets.

For several months our water has been perfect.

March 12 our water was a bit brown. 

My MTM tanks seemed to be leaking down the backwash line and replacing the seals, spacer, and piston didn't help.

The leaking valve wasn't a Fleck 7000 so I replaced it with a Fleck 7000 and new MTM media a couple of weeks ago.

Water still brown.

Replinished through dome port calcite/corosex (did not clean tank) 1cf.

Replaced Centaur Carbon 1cf.

Water still brown.

Replaced fine mesh resin 1.25 cf.

Here are my settings:

All tanks are 10x44 with Fleck 7000 valves.

Chlorine injection before the tanks.

Calcite/corosex (1cf total with ratio of about 5 calcite to 1 corosex)

Recently corrected water softener plumbing (resin could be fouled).
Replenished calcite and corosex.
Replaced MTM media.
Replaced Fleck 7000 valve on MTM tank as the old one continued to leak and I think it was due to gear wear rather than seals/spacers.
Replaced Centaur Carbon.
Surprised to find that carbon seemed fouled after six months of use.
Will investigate carbon valve settings.
Flushed retention tanks and found little if any evidence of precipitated iron.
Water again running clear.

Water was running brown.
MTM valve leaking through backwash line. Replacing seals spacer and piston did not help.
Seems like the valve was not resetting correctly and manual nudging the gears corrected the problem once. Replaced the valve, tank, and MTM media.
Water continued to run a little brown and determined water softener plumbed backwards.
Some chance softening resin fouled.
Otherwise chlorine injection may be strong.
Seals on calcite and MTM valves should be replaced periodically.
Calcite and corosex should be replenished periodically.

Plastic smell present with replacement Purolite SST-60 from AS.
Washed mineral tank with Clorox and replaced calcite and corosex (8:1).
Plastic smell somewhat abated (waiting for wife eval) with new resin and mineral tank fill.

Update

9/1/16 Replaced seals and spacers on MTM tank.

9/5/16 Replaced tube on Stenner chlorine pressure feed pump (was leaking)

9/9/16 Replaced resin with Purolite SST-60 and resulted in a profound plastic smell in the water, not yet resolved. Ordered problem resin from OPW. Also new 10x44 Enpress vortech tank.

9/10/16 Flushed both retention tanks, appeared that little iron was ejected

9/10/16 Ordered replacement resin and Centaur carbon from AS

9/10/16 Corrected slow backwash line leak on MTM tank by finding the valve cam was not exactly on “s” when in service. Easily corrected with socket wrench.

Back in black, so to speak

I replaced the dripping nipples with stainless steel. Had to order them online.
I replaced the spacers, seals, and piston on the MTM Fleck 7000 tank and that solved the drip from the backwash.
After reassembling I noticed the Pot Perm was not drawing and ended up disassembling and reassembling and cleaning the various components three or four times. Each time I'd clean more/differently. I wish I knew exactly what the problem was, but it's working again, whew!
a) I noticed today I need more calcite/corosex.
b) Also I need to get a new MTM riser tube (might have one) and reseat it as I pulled it out some and cut it off and now I'm sure it's not in ideal position. 

Update

The system has been stable for about a year.
I replaced my Centaur Carbon in November.
I have had various drip leaks between the nipples connecting my bypass valves with my flexible hoses.
The galvanized nipples corrode and are not ideal.
The Fleck 7000 with male bypass assembly connections seems ideal.
Maybe I can replace my other valves with the 7000 eventually.
I noticed dripping from my MTM backwash line and disassembled and cleaned the valve.
The problem may not have been corrected.
I may have to replace the seals and spacers. I hypothesize that the spacers warp due to chlorine contact.
It seems I replace those in contact with the chlorine every year or two.
I plan to divert back washing from the three non-salt using tanks to irrigation in the next day or so.
This should reduce load on the septic leach field.
Other than needing to replace the seals and spacers the chlorine-retention-calcite/corosex-MTM-Centaur Carbon-Softener Resin combination seems to work well.
